Shione watched as Tamaki's attention drifted momentarily towards Haruhi. Had he perhaps noticed her own drifting away? She hoped she hadn't offended him or anything. He seemed to look at the new host with some sort of interest or fondness. It seemed he was really looking out for him, even if his methods were strange (or unwanted). He seemed to reach some realization, then quickly turn back to her with the same dazzling smile as before.
”Well it’s all right, I really should have been more attentive," he said. "It’s always a shame when someone is ignored like that. You do seem like a very beautiful person, and I’m not just talking about your looks.”
Shione shook her head lightly, again insisting that it was no fault of his. She hadn't wanted to be noticed. If anything, she had gone out of her way to stay clear of the spotlight. She doubted most of the people in homeroom knew much of her. Did she really want to be noticed now? ...She still wasn't sure. It was so much easier just to blend in, not having to worry about saying the right or wrong things. She smiled and shrugged as he again called her beautiful, more thanking than agreeing.
Tamaki began to excuse himself, and apologized for butting in.
"Ah, it was nice to meet you too," she said with a polite, shallow bow as he stepped away towards Haruhi. She watched on, slightly curious to see if Haruhi would still be annoyed. Her observation was interrupted with a soft buzzing from her bag. A bit startled, she pulled out her cell phone to see who it could be. She was thankful of the timing, since she wasn't currently in the middle of a conversation. Still she knew she should make this quick.
It was Naoki. The little picture next to his name and number smiled up at her. Huh, what could he want? She pressed the small green button and answered softly, not wanting to disrupt the activity around her.
"Hello, Naoki?" she answered.
"Yeah, it's me," he said, adding cheekily, "Hi, nee-chan!" Shione rolled her eyes a bit and smiled.
"Hi," she answered. "Did you need something? I'm still at school, so..." Shione could have sworn she heard him shaking his head.
"Ahh, not really," he said. "Just wanted to wish you good luck at the Host Club!" Shione furrowed her brows, a little flustered.
"W-wha? How did you-" she whispered, pitch risen to about 10% squeak. Naoki chuckled.
"You borrowed my laptop, remember? Yours was in maintenance yesterday... You left the page up!" Naoki's laptop was of the latest technology. Designed specifically for the blind, it was able to read out in both audio and Braille forms. There was a line below the keyboard with bumps that read out the page text. At least he couldn't see all the rather scantily-clad promo photos of the hosts.
"Jeez... How embarrassing," she murmured, glance back over at Haruhi and Tamaki, who seemed to be talking. "Really, that's none of your business..."
"Sorry, sorry," he said, lighthearted as ever. "It was right there, the computer just started reading it out... But really, I just wanted to make sure you actually went in. Making sure you aren't standing outside the door for too long." Shione slumped a little bit; he knew her too well... "But you did go in, right? Which is why I just want to say 'Good luck!' And don't worry too much."
"Worry too much? Look who's calling," she said with a smile, tone still mildly annoyed. There was a nervous laugh from the other side. "But thanks." She glanced up at the two hosts again, wondering if they might be heading back. She should probably get off the phone. "Oh, I really should go, I'm in the middle of a...thing."
"Ohhh, are you with the hosts? Which type?" he asked, sounding both curious and a little teasing. No doubt he had probably explored the site a little bit himself. She gave the phone a skeptical look.
"Goodbye," she said sweetly, and then hung up. Naoki always managed to cheer her up, even if he was annoying... She smiled and put her phone away, glancing back up at the hosts, then down at the tea. It smelled like roses...like Naoki's room. Not just the bad times, but the laughs and jokes. Maybe it wasn't so bad.
She took another sip.
