::Shione Motoori::
Type: Original
Age: 17
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Crushes: None so far
Face Claim: Aoi Futaba of Asobi ni Iku yo
Appearance:
Shione is thin and pale and stands at the taller end of average, at five feet and six inches. She has a slim and slightly bony frame, and is a bit lacking when it comes to curves. If anything, she’s pear-shaped, with more hips than bust. She weighs about 120 pounds or so. Her face is round, with high cheekbones and doe eyes. Her rather youthful appearance is contrasted by a thick pair of glasses and a hint of a slouch in her posture. Overall, she gives off a rather nerdy vibe.
As a full-blooded Japanese, it’s no surprise that she has dark eyes and hair. She keeps her hair long to about her waist, with fringe and bangs cut to frame her face. She’s always worn her hair long, ever since she was little, and would hate to change it. Shione takes very good care of her hair, keeping it soft and well conditioned, and always tied up when working in the lab. However, other than tying it up for safety purposes, she rarely changes her hairstyle from just plain left down. Once in a while she braids it, but usually only during finals.
Shione attends school in the required uniform, in all of its duckling-colored puffy-sleeved goodness. She isn’t particularly fond of it, but sees no gain in complaining. She sheds it promptly when arriving home in lieu of some more comfortable clothes. Perhaps a sundress or a blouse and slacks, or even comfortable sweatpants.
She enjoys swimming in her houses indoor pool. She usually wears a one-piece swimsuit of some sort; much more practical, no need to worry about parts coming off. She also wears a swimcap to protect her hair.
Personality:
Shione is very intelligent. Specially tutored from a very young age, she has always been very bright, especially in left-brained subjects such as mathematics and sciences, and has extra studies in university-level material. She’s very methodical, and defaults to logic.
When it comes to people skills, however, she’s somewhat lacking. She wouldn’t be considered exactly friendly. Shione has mostly given up on being socially accepted, and comes to school solely for the sake of her studies. She has a reputation for being quiet and strange, along with frighteningly smart. She has some of the highest test scores for her year. When in partner or group projects, Shione is completely happy to do the whole project herself, producing excellent grades (and mixed reactions from partners).
When she does interact with others, she’s fairly offbeat, often speaking technically and sometimes missing cues, references, and jokes. Her awkwardness tends to alienate people. She’s usually pretty reserved when it comes to almost any subject but academics. Shione gets flustered and embarrassed easily, and a blush shows up like red flags on her pale face.
Around those she does not know well, Shione is extremely introverted. While she may try be polite, she doesn’t focus too much on their thoughts and feelings, and may come off as a little insensitive. To the people she is close to, she’s extremely loyal and caring and thinks the world of them. (Unfortunately, the range that this extends to is still very small.) Shione is especially sensitive when it comes to being deceived or betrayed on a personal level, and is slow to trust again afterwards.
In the face of romantic possibilities, Shione considers herself pretty much hopeless. She hasn’t had much luck with people in general. Figures that narrowing it down to a Y-chromosome probably won’t help much. However, she’s never been in love before and knows not to completely rule out the possibility. Her brother sometimes teases her about getting a boyfriend.
Truth be told, Shione hides behind her intelligence. It’s not just her social ineptitude, but her own fear of further rejection that creates the image she has of herself, and fuels the guise she projects. The one thing she knows she has going for herself is her wits, and she doesn’t hesitate to play on that strength.
She is also quite ashamed of her faults, deep down. Shione wants to connect with others and make friends, but has been too anxious to really have an honest go at it. While she has come up with many excuses to protect herself from having to do so, she is continually realizing that there is really no reason for her to try to come out of her shell. At her brother’s concern for her lack of friends and insistence that she should open up more to others, she has resolved to try to change herself little by little.
Shione aspires to become a doctor. Perhaps a neurosurgeon. Ever since the incident with her brother, it’s been on her radar. As she continued to study and found a passion for biology and health science, it seemed more and more like what she wanted to do.
History:
Shione grew up rather sheltered from the world in some ways, and very exposed to it in others. She’s the eldest child of Yasu and Toshiko Motoori, with one younger brother. Her father’s family owns a pharmaceutical company (Motoori Pharmaceuticals, who would have guessed?), which Yasu is now in charge of. Because of this, they are very well-to-do.
Yasu is a pragmatic and straightforward man, very driven by his work. While he is often busy, he cares very much for his family and makes a point of keeping them as a main priority. Much like Shione, he is very logical and prefers to have things planned out. He’s a creature of habit. Yasu was somewhat conflicted as a young man, torn between his own passion for medicine and his family’s expectations to take on the business. He started out studying both business and medicine at university, but found it was way too much for one person to handle. Not wanting to cause unneeded conflict and disappoint his family, he conceded to taking over the business. He’s always regretted that decision a little. Having a family and finding other passions in life eased this bitterness, and he is now mostly happy with his life. Good money, good family, good future, can’t really complain. Even so, he has vowed not to put that kind of pressure on his own children, and encourages them to do what they love. Honestly, even if they left the company, the Motoori’s would still have relative and friends in the business, and would have enough money to keep them well cushioned for several generations.
Toshiko Motoori (nee Nakaba) is more free-spirited than her husband. She grew up in a upper-middle income household, living a wealthy but otherwise normal life. She was raised with a pretty strong sense of morality and individualism, and has always had a confident air about her. Toshiko dreamed of starting up her own charity organization. She was fairly bright, and ended up attending the same prestigious university as Yasu, also studying business. Much less stuffy than a lot of the other hoity-toity business majors, she stood out to the slightly-awkward Yasu. She noticed him too, thinking his methodical quirks and lack of cockiness to be endearing. They watched each other from a distance for a semester until being partnered together for a project. From there, talking turned to friendship turned into romance. Of course, Yasu’s family took a bit of warming up to the idea of him marrying somebody on a different financial level, but his decision to take over the company helped smooth things over.
The couple married shortly after college, but remained childless for several more years as Yasu adjusted to his new role and Toshiko got her own projects in place, as well as gaining a position in the Motoori company on the side. Yasu was very stressed a little bitter in his first few years, disheartening his wife. Meanwhile, Toshiko was finding some difficulty in getting her own projects off the ground. While her husband’s family had leverage, there was some amount of stigma that came with marrying into money. While the charity did eventually get up and running, it was a darker time for them. Both of them hope never to go back to that place.
Things turned around when they decided to start a family. Shione was born, a healthy and happy girl much to their delight. From a very young age, she showed much potential academically. Private tutors and fancy programs were hired to give her the best advantage possible. Three years later, they had a son, Naoki. Shione fell into the role of big sister with enthusiasm, and the two of them were very close growing up. Naoki looked up to his sister. It was like a happy family portrait.
Things got complicated when Naoki was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of four. Ependymoma, they called it. Naturally, they rushed him into the best treatment available and were able to remove the tumor successfully. Unfortunately, this came at the price of his eyesight. The tumor had been too close to the part of the brain controlling sight, and it couldn’t be removed without damage. The family was grateful for his survival, but devastated at his loss. Shione took it especially hard. Seven at the time, she couldn’t fully understand and accept why this had to happen to her brother of all people. If anything else, she grew even more protective of him, staying nearby as he recovered.
This was also about the time that her social difficulties became evident. She was enrolled in elementary school (despite her insistence to study at home with her brother), and had no trouble academically. She was always at the top of her class. However, Shione was very shy, always preferring to study alone and avoid socializing when possible. She was considered a bit strange by most of her peers, always focused on her schoolwork and staying in to study during breaks. Shione was socially anxious and a little terrified, using her schoolwork as a shield. Luckily, another more outgoing girl managed to befriend her, and she found a niche that got her through the rest of elementary school. Her parents did worry a bit, but after she began to make a few friends, they figured it was only shyness, and something she would grow out of (Yasu was quite introverted as a child as well).
In middle school, things took a turn for the worse. Shione’s friends grew more distant as their social circles began to expand and hers didn’t. Shione did change; she got taller, began to wear glasses, and got even more recognition for her academic skill. She wasn’t exactly popular among her peers, and began to gain a bit of a reputation for being quiet and strange. Cliquey as middle school could be, Shione found herself mostly alone again. Her friends from elementary school would brush her off and leave her out of things, and generally made it clear that she was on the outs. Discouraged, Shione withdrew further into herself, focusing on her studies and accepting her role without a fight. It was just easier to let it happen than to try to be something different.
This worried her parents more, especially her social butterfly of a mother, who contacted a therapist, much to Shione's displeasure. If there was ever one thing to which Shione rebelled the most, it was this. She found the therapist patronizing and the whole thing unnecessary, and even went so far as to refuse to show up to sessions. This caused tension between Shione and her mother especially. Yasu wasn't particularly hot of the idea of forcing her to go to a therapist in the first place, and after some arguments, the subject was put to rest for the time being. Shione indignantly assured them that she was perfectly fine how she was and would not need anything of the sort.
Not much changed in her first year of high school. She mostly kept to herself, and continued to excel in her studies. It was highly recommended that freshman join a club of some sort, and for several months, Shione begrudgingly joined the swimming club. When Naoki got sick, though, she began to spend more time at home and dropped the club.
Naoki, who is now fourteen, is quite socially normal despite his blindness. If anything, he makes up for it with charisma. (Also, he is quite the handsome fellow.) It could be said that he takes more after his mother in terms of personality. He attended lectures at Ouran elementary and middle schools with additional studies to aid him. But he has fallen ill again in the past year, showing neurological symptoms such as come-and-go dizziness, nausea, and mild seizures. His brain shows no sign of unwelcome lesions, and the source of the problems has yet to be discovered. He continued attending classes at Ouran for a while, but was pulled out after an incident that nearly sent him falling down a flight of stairs. For a couple months now he’s been studying at home.
Shione keeps him company and helps him with his studies after school. Even now they get along very well, and often end up laughing and horsing around so that the tutors have to shoo Shione off so that Naoki can finish his work. Underlying this playful tone is the grim suspicion that these symptoms may be the harbinger of something worse. Neither sibling wants to admit it, but both are a bit terrified of what could happen.
Naoki also worries about his sister. He knows her almost better than anyone, and knows that she is really a gentle and wonderful person. But she never brings any friends over, and is never on the phone like a high school girl would be expected to be. Always studying. He has confronted her about this, expressing his worry that she was missing out on an important part of school, and that she should try to socialize more. While Shione initially brushed this off, it did eventually get to her. Maybe her parents had been right to call that therapist. She broke down and promised Naoki that she would try to make some friends and be more social, however hard it would be.

(This was from a multifandom roleplay; I was Walter Bishop from Fringe. I would post in character, but I am rather impatient right now and would just like to get this thing up… I will write a more fitting character preface later and replace this.)
Walter awoke to the sound of…nothing, actually. It was perhaps the absence of sound that roused him from his slumber. From behind his eyelids, he could sense that it was still very dark, maybe the middle of the night.
He always slept with a fan on during the night… It drowned out the other sounds, the persistent ticking of the clock, the low hum of the fish tank, and of course that dreadful puffball excuse for a dog that barked in the night.
But here and now, there was none of that. Just the sound of his own breathing and the blood running through his veins. Something was definitely not right. He opened his eyes and grunted slightly as he pulled his old body up into a sitting position.
“Peter?” he called. “Peter? Has the power gone out?” He thought another moment. “Did somebody run over the neighbors dog?” His eyes adjusted further, and he realized that he was not in his bedroom at all, or in his pajamas.
Walter was still dressed as he had been for work today, in a grey button down shirt and slacks under a white lab coat. In fact, he did not remember going to bed at all that night. The last thing he remembered…was trying to remember something as he worked in the lab.
No, no, this was definitely all wrong. Perhaps he had been kidnapped, and his memory erased. Or maybe teleported… Maybe he had been led here while under the influence of hypnosis. Or maybe he had overdosed on something? Possibilities ran through his head, and Walter struggled to get to his feet.
He noticed his hands and lab coat were wet with some sort of liquid. Ectoplasm? Walter stuck out his tongue and hesitantly tasted whatever covered his palm. It tasted of water, dirt, and a little like day-old coffee. Most certainly not ectoplasm.
Walter furrowed his brow. This was definitely a problem. He didn’t know where he was, or how he got here. He began muttering to himself, the wheels turning in his mind, but seeming to lead him in circles. The most important thing was to stay calm.
As he muttered and thought harder and harder, Walter began to absentmindedly walk down the corridor, eyes averted to his hands as he seemed to be counting or listing something on his fingers.
Walter’s thoughts were interrupted when he began to hear voices echoing through the corridor, coming from a ways up ahead. He stopped suddenly, the leftover momentum taking him by surprise along with the realization that he had been walking all this time. Well, on the bright side, it might have led him to help of some sort.
“Hello!!” he bellowed, half raising his arms for emphasis although he almost sure he was out of their sight. “Who’s there?”
