Haruhi's eyes were fixed on her book. The girl frowned in concentration at the words. English wasn't all that difficult for her, not that any other subject was difficult, but it wasn't like she didn't need to study, especially when it came to vocabulary. Exams weren't really nearby, but she still liked to keep up with her school work. Haruhi had a burden everyone else in this school didn't: She had to keep her scholarship. That meant she had to study twice as hard as the others and, truth to be told, it seemed as if others had a less hard time learning. Maybe it was because they didn't have more cares than that, unlike her who had to be a housekeeper and a cook at home, or maybe she just wasn't as smart as she first thought. Oh well... She was at least normal, in comparison of the rest of the host club.
The girl let out a sigh, remembering the hard times she'd gone through lately. They were crazy. There was no other explanation for it. These rich bastards insulted everything she did or had, reacted absurdly at every day things like instant ramen or instant coffee, and made her go through the many pains of having to deal with their childish ideas.
A shudder went down her spine, and Haruhi's eye twitched. The girl dressed as a boy looked around suspiciously. There was something in the air. The library was peculiarly quiet today and that alone was enough to make her believe something odd was going on. After a moment of silence, she let out another breath. Probably just her imagination. And she turned her eyes back to her book...

The year was just getting started, and the Host Club was obligated to celebrate. Nothing started off the school year better than a formal dance. Glittering chandeliers, the sound of violins filling the air, young couples gliding across the dance floor; there was nothing better than that. With a budget full of money then, the Host Club was ready to give the school a show! There was even the additional benefit; they could formally introduce their newest member Haruhi Fujioka. So overall, there was a lot to celebrate, and Haruhi could finally be given the chance to feel like a real upper-class man. The only issue? Well…she didn’t seem to be the kind of person to really go for such a thing. And so, it was up to him, Tamaki Suoh, and his charming good looks to convince the Host Club’s Dog to join in the fun.
Knowing the boy’s study habits, it didn’t take too long for Tamaki to figure he was in one of the libraries. Finding out which one he was in was a bit harder though; after all there were several libraries in the school. Going through each one, using the club’s network of customers, he eventually narrowed down which library it was the boy was hiding in. Entering through the door with a determined look on his face, Tamaki accepted the challenges before him; finding the boy, and convincing him to dance! Like a dashingly handsome rogue, he slinked through the library, searching down his prey. Not before long, he found the boy hunched over a book. Smiling with a flash, Tamaki prepared himself.
”There you are Haruhi!”
Walking right over, Tamaki placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. He was expecting him to probably be praying he would go away, but Tamaki had no intention to do so.
”I wanted to ask you about something. Do you have any formal dancing experience? The Host Club is holding a dance to celebrate the beginning of the school year, and of course you are expected to come as a Host.”

His subject apparently had no motivation whatsoever for this project. He was going to have to pull of something drastic in order to try and get the boy more interested in the dancing. Although, he was interested in seeing that the boy did not have any kind of dancing experience, but that could easily be fixed. In fact, Tamaki could teach the boy to dance, although with their height differences Haruhi would have to be the female role. Maybe Honey could dance with Haruhi as Tamaki instructed? Whatever the case was he would help the boy find his inner dancer, or at least a gentleman who knew how to waltz.
Outside the lack of interest in dancing, the other reason for the boy’s reluctance seemed to be there was no incentive for him to do so. As the dance was outside club hours (although wouldn’t an even held by the club count as ‘club hours?’), there was technically nothing FORCING him to go. And Tamaki knew appealing to the entertainment of the ladies and club unity and all that would not work with Haruhi. He was too uncaring about the club, and a lot more practical minded (only Kyouya was probably more practical minded, at least in Tamaki’s experience). There was a quick glance of annoyance at the utter lack of emotion Haruhi was having, but obviously Tamaki wasn’t going to quit just yet.
”Well then…”
Haruhi turned back to his book, and Tamaki just “grrred” a bit. Well, it was a good thing he was ‘annoying,’ as he had been called before. There was only so long Haruhi could ignore him before interacting with him again. Besides, Tamaki had an idea on how to get the boy interested.
”It is true, the dance is outside of Host Club hours, so you aren’t required. However, and as an honor student you should know this, extra work tends to bring extra rewards. If you attend the dance, I will convince Kyouya to lower off your debt. Let’s say…by half a million yen? And of course, you’ll be free to take any food you want home; we’ll have hors d’oeuvre, caviar…fancy tuna.”
He waited a second for that the settle in; food and less debt, what about that could Haruhi resist? Now of course, it was time to work on sealing the deal. He was even talking in a more serious manner up to this point to show how serious he was about the whole thing. Of course by this point he was starting to turn into a more of his usual tone of voice.
”Now of course you stated you had no dancing experience, but that can be easily rectified. As a fully rounded gentleman, I am of course well trained in dance. While my height does mean there would be some difficulty in teaching you, I am sure we can manage something. I’ll excuse you from your host duties for this week to let you practice your dancing.”

"Well then..."
Haruhi almost rolled her eyes at the start of that sentence. It didn't matter what he could say, she was not going to change her mind. She had far more interesting things to care for than a silly fancy party. She could already see it, having to dress up in some silly outfit, wear shiny shoes and having to dance with girls while they all were their fancy, rich bastard-y selves. Yeah, she passed.
The girl's eyes twitched though as he added the plus of assisting. "I- I'm sure I can manage without it. I get enough credit with my school work." It was Haruhi's version of 'Try again'.
And then another plus. Lowering her debt. By that much too?! Her eyes widened. "We-well, I guess I could stop by, but... I really don't think that would be-" Fancy tuna?
The girl's expression turned dreamy then. "O-Otooro?" She wondered, eyes wider than ever, even shiny at the thought of finally trying something as sweet and succulent as that. "There's going to be... tuna at the party?" Leave it to Haruhi to actually act and look like a girl, eyes wide and innocent, with a tiny, gentle smile and a sweet expression, just at the thought of food.
But then she noticed Tamaki senpai was still there, and her expression changed, blushing, trying to hide her excitement over it. "Do you- do you think I'm so greedy I would fall for something like that?" Her expression said it all. Yes, yes she was.
And now he was saying she needed to learn how to dance. Haruhi let out a sigh. There was no way out of this, was there? At least she got a break from hosting.
"You don't have to teach me." She said without missing a beat, "I can ask one of the girls."

A sly grin showed up on Tamaki’s face as Haruhi’s eyes widened at the offer of dropping down his debt. Apparently Tamaki knew just where to throw his appeals to get the rookie to do what needed to be done. The fancy tuna, it seemed, was just the final push needed to convince Haruhi to come. He looked just like one of Tamaki’s many fan girls as he seemed to drift off into his own mind at the thought of the fancy tuna prize that awaited him if he went to the dance. Tamaki had to admit that he was so adorable; maybe that was why the girls seemed to like him so much? Even better, he tried to hide his excitement over the whole thing, and Tamaki just had to smile at it all.
”Ahhh, there’s no need trying to hide it. We both know you’re really just in it for the fancy tuna. Your just such and adorable little rookie Haruhi.” Tamaki stated, patting the boy on the head like he was a puppy. He was just so cute when he was angry like that. Oh, they would have such a splendid time practicing dancing, with him just standing off to the side as he danced with one of the other girls and…..wait, what?
I can ask one of the girls.
One of the girls.
Girls.
So Haruhi didn’t want him to teach him to dance? Tamaki’s expression just dropped, going from acting like Haruhi was a puppy and more like he had just been shot at, struck down in his prime. Why didn’t Haruhi want to learn how to dance from him?! Who else could be better than him? But, but, but why?! It was such a tragic thing, but he had to respect Haruhi’s decision.
”O-okay then. I guess if that’s what you really want…”
Tamaki simply walked away, disappearing behind one of the bookcases before dropping down onto the ground ,grabbing his knees with one arm while he just started scanning the books in front of him. In his depressed, confused state he sat, wondering why Haruhi didn’t want him as a teacher, and hurt that Haruhi didn’t want him to teach him how to dance…

Haruhi's pout only deepened as well as her blush. The patronizing way he was petting her head made her uneasy, and she tried moving away from his hand. He still managed to pat her some though, and it bothered her immensely, so it only added reasons to decline his offer to teach her how to dance.
"Yes. That's what I want." She added, raising an eyebrow. The boy really seemed... devastated? Why? Haruhi rolled her eyes as he walked away. Good, now she would be able to focus on her studies.
She went back to her book, lowering her eyes and trying to read. Trying being the keyword. There was an aura in the room... a rather dark, broody aura that didn't let her focus the short seconds she'd tried. What in the-?
Walking around the shelves she found the cause of such a dark environment. Her eyes widened as she saw the king of the Ouran host club crouching and brooding in front of a bookcase. Oh come on! Haruhi rolled her eyes again, letting out a breath. He wasn't just like her dad, he was worse than that. At least Renka wasn't as childish... Okay, he was, but she imagined he never acted this way with her.
"Fine." She finally said between her teeth. "You can help too."

Tamaki remained in front of the bookcase, pouting and in a depressed mood after Haruhi rejected him. The odd thing about all of this was though; he really didn’t know why it hurt so bad having Haruhi reject him. So he didn’t want to learn to waltz from him, which was fine. Besides, with his height, Tamaki could only learn the position of the female without it being really hard and awkward so it was practical that Haruhi get someone else. But yet, he just felt this pain in his heart (and more realistically speaking his ego) when the boy said no. Just what was it about that boy that created such an emotional discord in Tamaki’s mind. After all, he was used to insults from twins, so that couldn’t be it. Maybe he had just been surrounded by fangirls for so long he had forgotten what it was like for someone to not like him? The best thing to do could just be to apologize and get over it. After all, it wasn’t like Haruhi was just going to come over and…
”Fine, you can help too.”
So much for learning important life lessons. Upon hearing Haruhi changing his mind, Tamaki’s mood instantly raised back into its normal, goofy, life-loving style. One second he was on the ground brooding, the next he was standing tall and proud, hand extended towards the boy. Hah, maybe Haruhi was just a little too intimidated by Tamaki to take up the offer initially. It was forgivable; there was many a person who was intimidated by such handsomeness and grace. That was one of the many curses about being beautiful, but at least now Tamaki could respect Haruhi for having the strength to overcome it and join him. Forgetting just about every other thing he had been thinking about, his mind shifted to the waltz.
”I see you changed your mind Haruhi. In that case, let me show you the graceful world of waltz. In fact,” he beautifully grabbed a hold of Haruhi’s hand. Since the library was not really the most appropriate place to be practicing the waltz, they were going to have to get moving.
”But first, let us move on to a more appropriate place. The library really doesn’t allow much room for dancing…”
Without really much concern for Haruhi, Tamaki started to drag him away, but then he remembered he had been studying in the library. Well, he could at least let him pack up his stuff, then they can run off and practice dancing.
”Uhhh, I guess I should let you get your stuff first. THEN we’re off to a world of grace and beauty!”

That'd been... odd.
Haruhi actually sweat as she watched the king do a complete turnover, from looking actually depressed to being back to his loud and obnoxious self. What the hell had happened? He had to have some medical issues. This bipolar behavior was not normal.
He grabbed her hand and she blinked down at his hand. She wasn't fond of being touched, yet these hosts didn't seem to know what a personal bubble was. "Say, can you-" She couldn't even ask him to stop touching her. He was already pulling, "My things!" She complained and, at least this time, she was heard. Haruhi let out a sigh, cursing herself for having a short moment of soft heart. He was going to drive her crazy.
Grace and beauty? Yeah right. Haruhi merely glared as she managed to walk back to her bag and stuff every book around inside until it was far too heavy for someone of her small frame to carry. That didn't stop her. As if it was nothing, she threw the bag over her shoulder and walked back to Tamaki.
"Alright, where to?"

Haruhi’s obvious discomfort about the situation she was in was pretty much unnoticeable to Tamaki. He was too distracted by his own thoughts of the dance that was coming up, as well as the issues of teaching Haruhi to dance. While he had never taught a boy before, it didn’t really lower the feelings Tamaki had for dancing. When done right, dancing was a beautiful sight to behold, two people gliding across the floor , twirling and spinning gracefully. It was like magic! He was only brought out of his thoughts when Haruhi came up to him, bag packed and ready to go.
”Oh, that was quick. Let’s see…actually the music room would probably do. Come along Haruhi, there’s no time to waste.”
Being trusting of Haruhi, and having had the delay in going to give him time to calm down a little, Tamaki didn’t rush to grab Haruhi’s hand and drag the boy with him. Instead, he just walked slightly in front of him, a brisk pace so they could get to the room as fast as possible yet give some time to just simply chat. Tamaki realized he didn’t know that much about the boy outside of a few things Kyouya had told him. But Kyouya tended to focus only on those things that would benefit the club, so Tamaki was sure there was probably something he had missed. Now would be a good time to try and get closer to the newest member, and really solidify this (one-way) friendship between them.
”So then Haruhi, if you don’t mind me asking, why exactly did you want to come to Ouran? I don’t think I ever asked you about that…”

Haruhi let out a breath, resigned and started to walk right beside him. She ignored the looks and loud shrieks from any female around, commenting among themselves about some type of fantasy. The girl merely continued walking, lost in thought.
Mother in heaven, what have I gotten myself into?
Whatever happened in that dance, Haruhi knew it would be bothersome. Just like the boy walking next to her. She narrowed her eyes at the blonde head before her, grateful that he hadn't just grabbed her hand and pulled her along like she thought he would. It certainly would had increased the muttering around them, and the happy gleeful sighs. Who knew what these girls were imagining?
Tamaki asked his question and Haruhi was abruptly brought out of her thoughts, blinking a couple of times at him as her mind came up with an answer.
"I heard Ouran is the best school in Japan. If I studied here I would be able to join any university I wanted." She explained in her usual stoic, business like voice. "I want to become a lawyer. Coming here will guarantee that. And I could get a scholarship so my dad doesn't have to work two jobs to pay for it."
She continued walking, absentmindedly. Her dream of becoming a lawyer was turning more and more difficult. She'd thought that she would be able to focus just in studying, keep her scholarship while getting the best grades she could, and then handling her house chores. Now she had to struggle with the Host Club activities, and now this ball and dancing lessons. She was truly growing tired and she was just starting in this school...
"What about you, senpai?" She asked with a tiny, polite smile. "Do you have a dream like that?"

So Haruhi wanted to be a lawyer did he? That seemed like an appropriate job for someone like him; he tended to act boring and stuffy like a lawyer at least. Kidding aside, he was glad to see that Haruhi had some plans ahead, but he also wanted to know what it was that his senpai wanted to do. Admittedly, Tamaki didn’t have that many plans; the plan his family had were for him to become the head of the family and take over the family business. But such things really didn’t interest Tamaki that much; he could easily do so (he was right behind Kyouya in grades), but he just didn’t have the passion for it.
”I’ll be honest, I’m not really sure what I’m going to do. I’m expected to take over my family’s company, but I really don’t have an interest in it. Maybe I’ll just run off somewhere and open up my own chain of host clubs or something,” he said, smiling with a chuckle.
Still, he was now starting to feel a little bad about dragging Haruhi off like this to do whatever his crazy plans were. He knew how the scholarship worked; if his grades slipped, Haruhi would have to leave Ouran. As far as Tamaki knew, through whatever Kyouya could tell him, Haruhi was doing fine. Even so, Haruhi couldn’t afford to goof off like him and the rest of the club could. Then again, he did owe the club eight million yen, so it had to be paid off…
”Hey Haruhi, what do you think about maybe have just a short dance lesson today to get your feet wet, and then you can get back to studying? I will off course be glad to help if you have any questions on your homework.”
There, that would be a nice compromise right? Haruhi still gets the dance lessons he needs for the dance, but he also gets a little time to work on his schoolwork. They would just keep it their little secret, without letting the rest of the club know. Oooooo, that just made it more exciting again. Him and Haruhi, just two guys hanging out. But why did that thought seem a lot bigger than it should be? For some reason Tamaki felt a little nervous about the idea, but he couldn’t think of any real good reason for it. Maybe he had just eaten something that didn’t settle with him at lunch today? Yeah, that would probably just explain it; just a little nauseous from a bad lunch. That had to explain the slight amount of heat in his face, just a slight bug or bad fish or something….

Haruhi raised an eyebrow at the answer. She could actually imagine that. A bunch of overly flamboyant places with roses everywhere and girls shrieking in excitement at the door. The lovely golden door would open to reveal a very fancy Tamaki, winking at them and glowing as if he'd attached glitter to his skin like some vegan vampire in a middle of a summer day... She could merely shudder at the picture in her head. Disgusting sight, that would be...
The girl kept walking along her senpai, eyes going up to a nearby clock. It wasn't that late. She could still practice this dancing thing, get back to school work and finish just in time to rush back home and make some quick dinner. Not that her father would be having dinner with her, mostly just making him something to heat up, but she liked helping in the little ways she could.
"Ah?" She turned her eyes back to Tamaki, stopping walking altogether. "What?" She asked, as if she hadn't heard right. It was like he could read her mind. The girl smiled gently, until she nodded, her smile growing until her eyes were barely visible, "Hn!" She said, "Thank you, senpai."
With the same smile, Haruhi started walking again, feeling lighter and far less moody. It was nice to be understood for once. Maybe her senpai wasn't as bad as she first thought.
"That'll give me some time to make dinner." She commented happily. "Dad won't have to have instant ramen after all."

Tamaki took a few seconds before he noticed Haruhi had stopped walking alongside. Stopping himself, he turned around a bit to see if something was the matter. Instead, he found himself facing the most adorable smile he had ever seen (how was this boy just so adorable?) as Haruhi thanked him for cutting the lessons short before starting to walk again. It was then Tamaki’s turn to just stand for a second, before giving off a more subdued smile. While he obviously loved to see girls smile, it still warmed his heart to see even a boy like Haruhi smile as well; in the end, as long as people were happy it was okay with him. Catching up with Haruhi, he did have to state there was one little catch in his offer.
”As long as you work your hardest in learning these steps, I don’t think it hurts to cut the lessons short. But if you start slipping up, I might just have to come over to your house for some extra tutoring,” he stated, giving a laugh, utterly free of the understanding such a thing would probably be a nightmare for Haruhi.
It was interesting that Haruhi’s first thought in response to the extra time was her father and something like her studies or anything like that. The two of them must have been really close to one another. That was a good thing; families should always be close no matter what. It was a tragic event whenever a family fell apart, and that would have been especially true in Haruhi’s case. The death of a parent could easily have caused him to fall apart, but instead he pushed onwards to fulfill his dream. It was such a noble story; the poor commoner overcoming life’s tragedies with a smile and moral fortitude, hoping one day to be just as successful as the aristocratic elites. He could see it now, Haruhi in the prosecutor’s chair (or defense attorney?), arguing cases before the highest court in the land….
And by that point Tamaki was off in his little dream world, eyes closed as he walked beside Haruhi, a slight smile on his face as he witness (in his mind) Haruhi succeeding in his goals.

"Yeah, that's- What?" Haruhi had been too preoccupied smiling and thinking of every work she could get done today, when her brain caught up with what Tamaki was saying. "Absolutely not. I have no intentions of having you in my house." It wasn't meant to be rude, but Haruhi could not control the glare nor the harsh tone her words came out with.
"I want to keep the Host Club as away from my personal life as possible. I didn't even want to be there in the first place." She sighed, moving along, her stoic voice continuing on, despite the fact that she was somewhat aware that her words might had not been the nicest. "I'm just following through with this because you- senpai?"
He was gone. Haruhi pursed her lips before sighing in defeat. He was hopeless. He had that look her own father got when he started to daydream. Silly men. Were all of them the same way?
