THE ROSES ARE RED Akane wasn't one for hanging around the school too much, but when her friends were chasing her around like bees attracted to honey. She had no where else to go. She stayed around the school after hours for a bit to get rid of her boy-crazy friends. She ended up in the Rose-Bush maze. She took in her surroundings as she looked around. It was an amazing place that Akane didn't visit very often. Though, when she did visit the area. Akane was amazed with it all. She found the area calming and quiet, along with a beautiful place. She wished she had brought her violin with her. She could've played a wonderful song, but no. She left that at home, or was it in a case in the music room?
Akane moved toward the wall of roses, carefully picking one from it's place. She still managed to cut her finger. She quickly brought the finger to her mouth, sucking the blood from her finger as it came out."Damn." She muttered. She never liked the taste of blood, but what else could she do? She wiped what blood was left on her puffy, yellow dress and continued deeper into the maze. Akane found herself amazed with how well kept the maze was. Not many people entered here, so she figured that it would've been over grown, but it was Ouran Academy. Everything is always put in its proper spot and amazingly clean. "They're cleaning bills mush be huge." Akane said to herself.
She was acting like a little commoner today, and felt like one as well. Ouran was on of those things that, no matter how many times you see it, it still amazes you to no end. Like a really good movie or a question with an answer so easy that you forget the answer.

Taking a walk was always the answer when you were troubled by something or when you needed to get some fresh air. Vince was the kind of person that was always in movement; he just couldn't stay at the same place all the time. It was why he was currently taking a walk outside, and suddenly ended up in the Rose-Bush maze. Now that he thought of it, he never went to that place before; roses and flowers were not in his favorite things, even if that maze was unbelievably amazing place.
He might as well explore the whole thing since he had a lot of time to waste before going home and shutting himself either in his room or the music room to get some time away from his annoying parents. He really missed his old man and his mother when they were entertainers, but there was no way to bring them back other than completely ruining their so-called happiness. Let's just forget this and enjoy the walk, will you? And he did so, with a small grin on his face.
The maze was extremely silent, and the only thing you could hear was the wind blowing away some dead petals, adding some beautiful effect to the place. But really, this place is really well kept; he might just thank the gardener for his or her hard work if he ever meets him or her. With that thought in mind, Vince began humming a random song he heard some time ago. It was an old song back in the eighties. Or was it the seventies? Anyway, it was quite the enjoyment for him because there was no one in that place, and because of said lack of people he could sing and hum to his own satisfaction.
During all this time he took in his surroundings as he walked, enjoying his trip in the Rose-Bush maze for the first time in his school life. He approached one of the walls and stared at one of the many roses standing there. If someone was talking at the moment, he wouldn't have heard him or her as he was too focused at staring at the plant. He slowly picked it, being careful not to get cut by the flower's prickles themselves.
"Hmmm." Such was the sound that emerged from his lips as he stared at the newly-picked rose, wondering what he could do with it except doing like a romantist and smell it. He looked left; he looked right. There was something he had always wanted to do with a rose, and now it was so tempting to do so.
With his right hand he guided the stem toward his mouth and bit on the side of it. He raised his left arm toward the sky in a fabulous fashion. He suddenly took a pose after tapping his feet on the ground.
"Flamingo, yeah."
For a moment he thought he looked dumb standing there in a pose that would fit more a professional dancer than an entertainer such as him, but who cares? He was alone.
Or so he thought until he looked behind him and noticed that there was another person staring at the roses and who might have heard and seen him doing his usual shenanigans. From under his headband he gazed at that person; a girl who looked quite young.
Vince casually raised a hand and waved at the girl, greeting her at the same time. He wouldn't let that known, but he was a little embarrassed about being seen in an idiotic pose. Sure, he was used to being seen like that, but it was weird being caught off-guard like this. Oh well.
"Hey."

THE ROSES ARE RED She didn't see that, she didn't see that, she didn't see that. Oh god, she did just see that. It was weird, and funny at the same time. She was admiring the roses and then this random guy comes along, picks on and then, like does the flamingo or something. What did he say? Yeah, it was the flamingo. Akane had to bite her lip to keep from laughing, instead a smile spread across her face.
She waved back to him, probably just trying to be nice or something."Hey." She greeted him back. Maybe he was trying to cover up for what he just did. He was blonde, like her. Weren't blonde rare in Japan? Probably, ah whatever. It didn't really matter. He was older then her, by at least a year or two. He was wearing a red headband over his eyes. "Weird," She said. "How do you see if the headband is covering your eyes?" There she went again, talking without thinking. Well, it wasn't a bad question, right?

He sure was glad to see that she didn't burst out laughing, even if it was completely obvious that she was holding herself back, what with that smile that appeared across her face. What was even more wonderful was that she returned his greetings with the same thing he said. She seemed nice enough to have a conversation with; such a thought brought a smile to Vince's face.
He approached the blonde- such a color was rare amongst non-caucasian people- just to get that casual feeling of friendliness and began looking at her from under his headband. Of course, said look lasted one or two seconds and all he got was that it was quite the beautiful person, which was quite typical for people attending Ouran. The world of the rich and beautiful, right?
Vince laughed as he listened to the girl's question, which involved both his eyesight and his red headband. That question was asked quite often, and he really didn't mind responding to that.
He pushed the cloth of his headband higher a little, exposing a little bit of his eyes to the person who asked this question and immediately replaced it at its former position.
"It's all in the angle." He started. "You can't see the eyes, but the eyes can see you. Why, what and how are the secrets of the trade, of course."
That was how he always answered to such a question that involved his headband. Punctuating his explanation with a grin, the caucasian teenager scratched his neck for a few moments before placing his hand in a gun motion, pointing the blonde girl with his index. Such a pose was really old-style, but it didn't make him look like an overly polite person; it made him appear more casual and relaxed.
"Name's Vince McDowell." He introduced himself in a single breathing. "Question for you. May I have your name?"
With that, he offered the girl a handshake, ideal for introductions and which were pretty much some kind of international greetings. At least that's his idea of a greeting; he still wasn't used to greeting with bows or anything of the sort.

THE ROSES ARE RED "In the angle," She repeated. "That's really cool. So, you can, like watch people without people knowing your watching them." That sorta made the guy sound like a stalker in Akane's mind, but if she never brought that up. He would've never sounded like a stalker. Akane knew the kid wasn't a stalker. He didn't seem like the type, but it was always possible.
Akane's smile stayed for a while, and grew when he asked if he could have her name. "Well, it depends McDowell-san," She said cheekly. "Would you like my name?" Usually she would've given her name to him straight, but she was pretty bored, and decided she wanted to play with him for a bit. She felt something moving down her finger, it felt like a liquid. She brought her finger into eyesight. It was still bleeding, that wasn't good. "Hmm, what ta do." She asked herself looking at the finger. She wiped the blood off on her dress and then pressed another finger against the cut, and then looked back at Vince with a smile as if she never noticed the cut.

"Of course I want to know your name." He spoke, knowing full well that, according to the tone the blond girl used when asking that question, she only wanted to either tease him a little or just have fun. "I can't just call you by using 'You'."
He may be casual, but not to the point of being extremely rude to someone. Even he knew that names were important in society, and speaking of names, there was something that wasn't right; something that he had to correct at this very moment. Of course, it was not a major problem, but a simple preference.
"Oh, and please don't call me so formally. Call me Vince, alright?" Such was his problem; Vince was never the kind of person for formality. Unless he was forced to, he always preferred to call someone by his or her first name instead of adding random suffixes, which caused quite a few problems with people who insisted on said formality. It was the same with his name; he preferred being called Vince instead of McDowell or any variation that included suffixes like san or kun.
It was after talking that he noticed that the girl might not have been paying attention to him, instead she was looking at her finger which was currently bleeding. Did she cut herself with the roses? It probably was the case, considering they were in a freaking rose maze.
He was impressed when the blonde wiped her finger on her dress. In his mind, the world of the rich and beautiful didn't do the sort of thing that might dirty expensive clothing. Especially with their own blood. For a second he thought about ripping a part of his headband so he could lend it to her; headbands were not rare in his room. There was the chance that the wound might get infected after all. However, for some reason he decided to wait a little before doing such an action.
Putting his hand on his own chin, Vince leaned a little toward the girl while wondering what to do with that. "You sure you're going to be alright with this? The wound might get infected, you know."

THE ROSES ARE RED "Well, you could call me 'you'. I wouldn't take it offensively," She said with a small smirk. "But since you asked so nicely. I'm Akane Takahashi. It's nice to meet'cha." This guy wasn't like the rest. The other kids that inhabited the halls of Ouran would've cared less about what he name was, and would've just called her 'girl' or 'Takahashi-san'. It was weird to be around a somewhat normal kid.
Hmm, he didn't seem Japanese. Maybe he wasn't, by the looks of his hair he probably wasn't, but there was always the possibility that he was Japanese fully. As far as Akane knew, she was a pure blooded Japanese, but there would have to be in her blood line, someone who wasn't a pure blood Japanese. He had just asked her to call him, Vince. Strange, very strange. Most people would've asked her to call them something with a -sama at the end, or maybe even -hime. It's happen to Akane on several occasions.
"Okay McDo-Vince." She slipped up on that. Her parents did teach her to be a very polite, and she has problems calling people by their name without a suffix. She saw him lean over to her a bit. "Oh yeah. It'll be fine," She said. "But, if it'll set you to ease, then i'll cover it." Akane wiped her bloody hands on her dress and then moved her uncut hand to the end of her dress. She gripped the fabric tightly and then ripped it. She ripped off quite a bit of the bottom, but not too much.
She ripped the already ripped piece of dress from the rest of the dress. She lifted her knee, so she was now standing on one leg and laid the piece of dress on her lifted knee. She put her bleeding finger on the fabric and then tied the fabric up around her finger. Or tried at least. It didn't work out too well. She looked up at Vince. "Can you help me tie this?" She asked him.

"Same here. Nice to meet'cha as well, Akane." He said, mimicking the small smirk the girl, now known as Akane Takahashi, gave him. It seems she was a little different from the others, which was quite a good thing in his mind. Maybe he had found someone to hang out with other than some people that had nothing better to do than talk about how business was going in their families. Sure, he had friends that he made because they did sports together, but they were certainly not the kind of people he would constantly hang out with, even if they were quite friendly with him.
Hearing someone say his name made him feel more at ease. You could say that Vince has already added Akane to his list of probable and potential friends in this school. Not even with a suffix, which was quite rare since everyone insisted on using those.
Vince raised an eyebrow at seeing the blonde girl moving her hand toward her dress. What is she doing? He thought as he noticed that said hand was now gripping tightly. Hmm... Was she about to-
Rip! Yes, she did rip the end of her dress. Under his headband, the boy's eyes widened with surprise and amazement. That... That just confirmed the fact that she was different from the other students who cared very much about their clothing, especially in girls. He wanted to laugh; he wanted to laugh oh so loudly for some reason. But as that would have made him even weirder than he already was he only settled for a mild laughter. It sounded like a chuckle, yet it sounded more like a laugh.
"You're different from the others, I see." He said with a smile on his face. "I like that in a person. Nice to see someone that doesn't care about their personal appearance that much."
After saying that, Vince suddenly went silent as he watched Akane trying to- or at least failing at- tying the ripped part of her dress around her finger. It was quite the humorous scene, seeing a girl trying to balance herself on only one leg at the same time as trying to tie a piece of cloth around a finger to cover a cut. Her head lifted as she looked at him with questionning eyes.
"Of course." His answer was quick. Upon finishing his answer, Vince's arm suddenly reached to grasp Akane's wrist and yanked her toward him. He did, however, stop her when the finger was close enough for him to tie easily without reaching too far. It was at this moment that he took the cloth and tied it up around her finger, humming a song at the same time.
It was finished quite quickly, as the task was only tying up a piece of cloth around a cut. Vince backed up a little and admired his work with his hands on his hips. "There you go." He was satisfied about this little task, and it showed, what with that grin stuck on his face.
He moved his hands to the back of his head and looked away from the now covered finger, opting to look at the girl's face. In the meantime he wondered what they should talk about. He actually wanted to know more about this girl's interests or what she was like. Maybe he should just ask her directly... That would be a nice way to start a conversation after all.
"So, Akane, tell me a bit 'bout you. What'cha interested in?"

THE ROSES ARE RED Akane simply nodded at the blonde haired boy. She knew that many people cared about their appearance. Akane surely wasn't one of those people. She was down-to-Earth and kept her head straight, unlike some of they air heads at the school. Vince also seemed different from most people at the school as well. It was, what was the word?, refreshing to see different people. It was more fun that way.
He laughed at her. He laughed at the scene she had just caused. She pouted slightly at the boy, "It's not nice to laugh at people ya know." Akane was sure the boy was different, like her, but not like her in ways. This boy, Vince, was a peculiar boy. Akane smiled at the boy, he had agreed to help her. Soon, she found herself being pulled toward Vince, and then her finger tied up. She watched him take a step back and rest his hands on his hips. He put his hands behind his head, not a habit seen around Ouran much. Maybe he was an honor student? Maybe not, but it was always a possibility.
What did she like? Or was the question more into what she was interested in? Well, the two kinda went hand-in-hand. Akane's hand reached up and started twirling strands of blonde hair between her fingers. A habit she did when she started thinking. "Well, I'm into music. I play several instruments, and I sing a bit," Akane shrugged. "That's about it. Though, unless you count trying to figure out the meaning of life." It was true. Akane was always looking for the meaning of life. To find love? To become rich? To have a family? To die? Everyone had a different view on life, but Akane wanted to find out the meaning of life. What was life for? That's what she wanted to know.
"What about you, Vince,"She asked. "What are you into?" Her curiscity started to kick in. It always did when someone asked her a question. She always had questions to ask and she always wanted to know things.

A series of nods was Vince's answer as he listened to Akane talking about what she was interested in. It seems that the both of them shared an interest in music. Even more than that, she even played instruments like he did; whatever they were he didn't know, but it was still awesome.
"The meaning of life, huh? I wish you good luck there." For him, the meaning of what was life was extremely vague. Every now and then at home he would sit down on the chair near his desk and start thinking about it, with no answer except 'Freedom', which was quite the huge word in the vocabulary of many people.
In fact, the word 'Freedom' has a very vague meaning as well, considering that someone could feel free in either slavery or living naked in the forest. The universal meaning is, however, being liberated of every worries and trouble, and it was that meaning that Vince stuck to. Enough philosophical thinking, Vince. Girl has asked you a question.
So he got that question back at him. What were his interests already? Oh, that was another easy question to answer, and he didn't really have to lie about it, not that he was a compulsive liar. Some people just liked to say 'Hey, we share interests' when they were not.
"My interests are all in the same group." He started with a smirk, his hand holding his chin. Apparently this was an extremely common position for Vince, but hey, it was comfortable. "Entertainment. Whether it be dancing, playing instruments, doing gymnastics or headspins, it's what I like to do. I love to entertain people; to clear them of their worries if only for a moment, just so I could see their happy, tearless faces and make them forget that they are living in this world, which is all but just a wild and selfish heaven." The boy smiled as he spoke about what he liked the most in his most sincere tone. That's all he wanted really. He only wanted to see the smiles of people; no sadness, only happiness.
"Other than that, nothing really comes to mind, really." Sighed Vince in satisfaction as he concluded.

THE ROSES ARE RED "So, you entertainer, huh," Akane said. "You sound kinda like my friend Katsumi. She's a dancer and does gymnastics, but she just does it for the fun. She doesn't really care if people enjoy themselves watching her or not." Akane giggled slightly at the thought of one time when Katsumi was being watched by a bunch of guys. The each and every guy ended up with a black eye. It was a pretty funny memory.
Akane looked from the spot her chose to stare at in the sky to Vince. "Is that your claim to fame? Being an entertainer?" She asked him. Curiosity, that was probably her biggest weakness. Always asking questions about people. Sometimes, her curiosity got her in too deep. She usually just asked questions about peoples' families because she doesn't know that they don't like to talk about their families. And then people start hating on her, which usually ends in her frowning. Which was something she did often, except around Vince.
There was something that made her go against her own personality. Or maybe, that wasn't her actual personality. She just thinks that it is. Or maybe she was just thinking about this too much.

"Yep, it's what I do." Vince answered to Akane's statement of him being an entertainer. Even if it's more of a past thing, considering that his family was not even doing this anymore. Sure, he still loves entertaining, but it was not like before that supposed lucky day.
The boy adopted a thinking pose as he thought about the blonde girl's question. What was claim to fame already? Something like the reason why someone is famous, right? Right. According to Vince's memories of a few years ago, his family wasn't really famous; in fact, they were nearly poor, living in a small appartment somewhere so they could have enough money to handle themselves between jobs.
"My family and I were not really famous." He finally said after a while of thinking. "In fact, we were kind of low on funds until three years ago, and by low on funds I mean that we were a little less than what rich people call 'commoners'. Not that I'm complaining about it. We weren't famous, but we had fun."
If people would have been focusing on listening to Vince, they would have noted that he made a little bit of unconscious emphasis on the past tense. He decided to stop there; mentioning anything more about his family was not something he was about to do for a long time, especially with someone he just met.
"Yeah, it really was." He repeated himself. "If I wanted I could tell you about the things I did back in America, but I'm sure it would be a little bit troublesome for you to listen."
Now why was he saying such things to a person he had just met? Heh. He probably was getting a little bit too casual and chatty with her; rare were the people he directly told that he was some kind of poor person back in his younger days. In fact, he could count them with only a hand. It sure was nice, though, to talk to someone about this.
"Now that I told you about my claim to fame, how about you tell me yours. I'm curious." Vince asked, eyeing his conversation partner from under the dark red headband that covered his eyes.

THE ROSES ARE RED Vince had only really vagely told Akane what his claim to fame was. Well, hardly even vagely. He talked in a past tense form, so. Was he no longer an entertainer? Well, he seemed like a person who liked to entertain, so maybe his family quit while he still kept entertaining other people. He had been a commoner? Akane didn't really like to use the term, commoner. It made her feel that just because she was rich, she was superior.
That was never the case with her. She liked being rich, sure, everyone did. Though, she always thought that commoners were the better people. They worked hard to achieve they're goals, while rich people like herself and the rest of the school, could just ask for something and get it. She was curious what it was like to be a commoner, so she asked. "So, what was it like being a 'commoner' and all," She asked, she did air quotes when she said commoner. "What's the differences between now and then?
Akane hoped that she wasn't going in too deep. Many people didn't like her doing that, but she was curious. She wanted to know what it was like to be a 'commoner'. Her claim to fame? She didn't really have one. Her parents were rich and that was pretty much the end of it. She shrugged at the boy. "I'm pretty much the same as everyone else, save for maybe you and a couple kids at Ouran. Born with rich parents," She said.

"Some people would say that being in the middle to lower class- especially a lower class- is extremely hard." Vince started immediately. "It's the case; it's not easy being one of the 'commoners'. In fact, you have to work hard to get what you want, especially if you're a poor person." It was something that happened to everyone who lived the same way the McDowells did back in America, as poor as the family was.
"Unlike rich people who can get whatever they want whenver they want, we actually had to work our way into the world." Vince continued. "But in the end, once we had what we wanted, there was the feeling of success and satisfaction. I liked- No, I love- that way of living and wouldn't even mind to live it again."
Not that he minded being one of the rich people that roamed everywhere in Ouran, of course. The problem he had the most with rich people was that they received everything without any work; that feeling of satisfaction was missing, which was something he enjoyed a lot.
"That's pretty much the difference between living as a rich boy in a rich family and a simple person who struggles his or her way to being someone worthy of recognition. It's all in that feeling of satisfaction. I prefer the hard way compared to the easy way, in fact." He concluded his speech- well, kind of- with a longing smile. Sometimes he really missed that way of living. Some people were just born "lucky" enough to be raised in a rich family, but that's how it was.
"I'd pay a lot to see a pretentious rich person to live the life of their so-called commoners for a couple of months, just so they can feel how hard it is compared to their easy way." He laughed upon saying that; it would be quite the sight, indeed. "It's not that I berate their way of living, of course. I just feel like it's too easy."
Passing a hand through his blonde hair, Vince decided to wait a little before speaking again. Grinning like an idiot, he only stood there, having fun playing with his headband as he listened to Akane talking. "Must have been nice, huh? How was your life, then?" He paused, taking his time to think about his next words. "I mean, how is your life as a high-classed girl like you?"

THE ROSES ARE RED Akane listened to Vince talking about the commoner life and what not. She laughed and picture what it would look like for a rich kid, like Akane herself, or one of the Host Club boys living as a 'commoner'. "I would probably pay to see some rich kid live life as a commoner as well," Akane thought about it for a second and then continued. "I've always kinda wanted to see what it would be like to a 'commoner'."
How was her life as a high classed girl? It was cool, until she started getting rebellious against her parents. She wasn't completely happy with her life, and if she could, she would ask for a better one. Maybe even one as a commoner, but the life she had was the one she was going to have until death. "Yeah, life was good, for the most part," She started. "It was good until......" Akane just kinda lead off with the sentence, she was really comfortable talking about her past, or her difference.
Her condition didn't really act up during her conversation with Vince. It was quiet and only a few noises came up every so often. There weren't any words, so she didn't see colors. She decided that the Rose-Bush Maze was her new favorite place on the campus. " Life is pretty good now, better then it once was," She took a breath. "But, I always feel like somethings missing from my life. Something important, but I'm not sure whats missing."
